Seven words on my Facebook newsfeed that should terrify all of us:
"It's almost time for Nutcracker auditions again!"
Last year a young niece of mine won a role in her local ballet company's production of The Nutcracker. What a wonderful experience for her!
What an ordeal for the rest of us.
Here's a summary:
Between mid-August and the end of December, doting mom posted on Facebook 36 statuses and 211 photos pertaining to The Nutcracker.
I have estimated that The Nutcracker-related expenses (based on mentions of tickets, souvenirs, flowers, meals, etc. by family and friends) ran upwards of $1,500.
Total time the child spent on stage: Two minutes.
This year, the other daughter is old enough to also audition for The Nutcracker.
And because I've been doing a lot of reading recently on quantum physics and multiverse theories, I had an awful thought.
If there really is an infinite number of universes, just imagine: Across every single universe, an infinite number of little girls are dancing in an infinite number of productions of The Nutcracker.
It kind of saps your will to live, doesn't it?
